This afternoon I watched Robert Morton’s (aka @TableauDataNerd) TCC13 session, “Understanding the Tableau Query Cache”.
He showed a simple but easy way to “warm” Tableau Desktop’s cache:
- Show the Tableau Desktop “Filmstrip”
- Right-click a thumbnail in the Filmstrip and choose Refresh All Thumbnails
- Profit.
Essentially, this action causes all the queries which “power” the sheets-as-thumbnails to be executed so we can see up-to-date thumbs.
Voila – you’ve brought a bunch of data into the local Tableau Desktop cache without touching a single sheet or dashboard. Cool stuff!
